Everyone in this house was acting weird.

That was the theme Thursday as Dax tried to do normal things. He even attempted making lunch—a grilled cheese sandwich to go with the leftover tomato bisque from the previous night’s dinner. Kelsey had stopped in right when he was trying to figure out how to get the pan from under the counter without bending over. He’d been promptly chastised for not asking someone for help.

But who? Nobody was around. When Helena finally came in from working with the horses, he’d finished his soup and sandwich and was hanging out in front of the TV in the living room. He’d started staying in here during the day while everyone was working. It was just a nice change of scenery from his bedroom.

“You have dinner plans,” Helena announced as she entered the room.

“Really? Where?” He was surprised by the jolt of excitement that raced through him at the possibility of having a dinner date with Helena. He’d asked her on an official date for the next night, but he’d been thinking. Maybe a date in a crowded restaurant with blaring music wasn’t a suitable first date.

Helena came around to stand at the end of the sofa, looking down at him. “Here. In the kitchen.”

That brought his attention from the TV screen to her. She was oddly covered in hay. Whatever question he was about to ask flew right out of his mind after seeing her.

“Looks like you’ve been having fun,” he commented.

She looked down. “Yeah. I need to take a shower and change. Just wanted to give you a word of warning. You know, so you didn’t make any other plans.”

“I’ll clear my calendar.” He was being sarcastic there, although he made sure to keep his tone light. “What’s for dinner?”

He had so many questions that had nothing to do with food. Would it be just the two of them? Could they make it romantic, maybe with some candlelight? Would she object to him standing up, pulling some of the stray pieces of hair from her hair, and kissing her until he left her breathless…?

“Grilled pork chops and potatoes au gratin,” she said.

What? Huh?

Oh, yeah. He’d asked what was for dinner. It would be rude to say he didn’t really care. He probably should ask what he really wanted to know.

“Am I the only one invited to this dinner or…?”

He was doing it—the very thing he’d forced himself not to do before. Playing it safe. Avoiding rejection by setting it up that it was okay otherwise. He should have just straight-out asked if it would be the two of them.

No. That could border on creepy. He definitely didn’t want to be creepy.

“So far, it’s Marc, Kelsey, Delta…” She hesitated. “Everett’s back in Chicago, closing some things out. I think he’s moving here soon.”

Dax watched her, fascinated with how animated she was all of a sudden. She was speaking at a fast pace and gesturing wildly, like she was nervous. Why would she be nervous?

“Just Marc, Kelsey, and Delta, then,” he said, directing the conversation back to his question.
